At night, York truly takes on a new lease of life.
Ghosts are rumoured to walk the streets at night, with notorious villains such as Dick Turpin, the highwayman, being buried within the walls. To discover York’s haunting history, there are a number of ghost walks available that take place at night, which tell the grisly tales from York’s past.
York has long been famous for the legend that it has 365 bars/pubs – one for each day of the year, so it can often be difficult to know where to go. Combine the haunting history of York with a trip to popular pub, The Golden Fleece, which is famed for its resident ghost and eerie atmosphere. Evil Eye Lounge, rumoured to be Johnny Depp’s favourite bar in York, has the Guinness World Record for the most commercially available gins (over 1,000 and counting!).
Popular places to enjoy a bite to eat or drink include The Star Inn The City, which is home to picturesque views of the River Ouse, whilst Michelin star chef Tommy Banks’ ‘Roots’ has become a firm favourite for diners.
The city is also home to two modern cinemas, Everyman Cinema and City Screen, both based in the centre. The latter boasts a jazz bar in the basement and a Riverside Café that also serves wine and beer. If live entertainment is more to your taste, choose from Joseph Rowntree Theatre, The Grand Opera House and The Theatre Royal, which show everything from popular pantomimes to national theatre shows and even Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
