Walking the Walls: A Guide to Exploring York’s Historic Ramparts (with the Best Pitstops!)
If there is one activity that truly captures the magic and history of York, it is walking the ancient City Walls. Encircling the historic centre, these beautifully preserved medieval ramparts offer spectacular panoramic views, a journey through centuries of history, and the perfect excuse to explore some of the city’s best pubs, cafes, and restaurants along the way.
The complete circuit is around 3.4 kilometres (just over 2 miles) and takes about two hours to walk continuously. But why rush? With historic landmarks and incredible food and drink spots dotted along the route, we highly recommend turning this walk into a full-day adventure.
Here is our ultimate guide to walking the York City Walls, including the best places to stop, sip, and sightsee.
Start the Day Right: Breakfast & A Brew
Before embarking on your elevated adventure, you will need some fuel.
-
Brew and Brownie (Museum Street): A beloved local favorite just a short stroll from the wall entrances. Famous for its incredible pancake stacks and artisan coffee, it’s the perfect place to start your day. (Arrive early, as it fills up fast!)
-
Gatehouse Coffee (Walmgate Bar): If you prefer to start walking immediately, head to the eastern side of the city to Walmgate Bar. Here, you’ll find a charming coffee shop tucked inside the historic 12th-century gatehouse! Sip an espresso on the rooftop terrace before setting off.

Micklegate Bar: The Royal Entrance
We love starting the main stretch at Micklegate Bar, the traditional, ceremonial gateway where monarchs enter the city. Historically, this was where the severed heads of traitors were displayed to deter rebels! Today, it houses the fascinating City Walls Experience museum.
As you walk the stretch from Micklegate, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the magnificent York Railway Station and the National Railway Museum. The sheer scale of the 19th-century curving train shed is a marvel, and you might even spot a heritage steam train chugging down the tracks.
Bootham Bar to Monk Bar: The Best Views (and Pub Gardens!)
This is arguably the most breathtaking section of the walls. As you pass Bootham Bar (which stands on Roman foundations), you are treated to unrivaled, close-up views of the majestic York Minster and the beautifully manicured gardens of the Treasurer’s House.
Time for a pint?
You are in luck. This section of the wall overlooks the beer garden of The Fat Badger, a fantastic family-friendly pub offering great ales and hearty food.
Alternatively, step off the walls at Bootham Bar and visit the Lamb & Lion Inn. This historic pub has an incredible beer garden that backs directly onto the city walls, offering a spectacular setting for a mid-afternoon gin and tonic or a local Yorkshire ale.
If you are looking for something truly elegant, step down near Grays Court. This stunning hotel and restaurant boasts the only private access to the City Walls, and its peaceful, bio-diverse gardens are a serene oasis for a glass of wine or a luxurious lunch.
Monk Bar: Uncover Royal Secrets
As you continue, you will reach Monk Bar, the tallest and most ornate of all the gateways. Here, you can step inside to visit the Richard III Experience, an interactive museum detailing the life and controversial reign of the last Plantagenet King.
Clifford’s Tower & The River Ouse
The walls break briefly around the river and the castle area, which presents the perfect opportunity to visit Clifford’s Tower. Perched dramatically on a steep grassy mound, this stone keep is the last remaining structure of York Castle. Climb to the newly installed roof deck for stunning 360-degree views of the city.
Nearby, you can also wander through the tranquil Museum Gardens, a beautiful botanical space that houses the striking 11th-century ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.
Dinner by the River:
After a full day of walking, you deserve a spectacular dinner. As the walk brings you near the River Ouse and Lendal Bridge, treat yourself to a meal at The Star Inn The City. Overseen by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Pern, this brilliant riverside brasserie champions local Yorkshire produce in a beautiful setting. For a more casual but equally delicious option, Rustique on Castlegate offers fantastic French-style dining just moments from the castle area.
